Music Mantra Monday ~ Keep Your Head Above Water
One of the most difficult effects of dealing with a debilitating, chronic and unpredictable illness is making others understand. In a society where judgment and personal conclusions are passed so easily, it makes the sufferer feel as though they must keep silent. It's easier to allow others to believe there really isn't anything wrong or that everything is in your head or you are just being lazy and coming up with excuses not to have to do what you need to. That's one of the reasons I stand up for those who feel they have no voice to make others understand what they are really going through.
At some point, you have to take a stand so others will stifle their judgment and personal conclusions. One way to do this is through a positive, creative distraction. I have my writing, for example. Avril Lavigne almost lost her life to her battle with Lyme disease. She is using her music to help others understand what she's going through to, hopefully, make others see that these health issues are as real as the people living with them. A very strong and brave girl, in my opinion.
All I will say is that my hope is for others to make a goal to try understanding illnesses, diseases, mental/emotional struggles, etc. before forming an opinion. After all, those of us living with these issues are just getting by day-to-day trying to keep our heads above water.
And knowing others care enough to reach out and listen, means more than you know.
